Barrabool – the ultimate ride park?
07-08-2007
Maybe not the ultimate, but members of the Geelong Sporting Motorcycle Club do know one thing; McAdam Park, the land on which they have roosted for the last 44 years, would make one hell of a ride park heaven if they are given just half a chance!
As part of their continuing battle to save the land which they have used for decades, the club has been working on the ‘Big Picture’ solutions to their predicament.
The club needs to raise the funds to buy the land before it is sold on the open market. McAdam Park has been home to some of the best racing Australian fans are ever likely to see.
With 300 acres of picturesque rolling hills to play with, SMCC have released plans for a proposed off road ride park to cater for all facets of off road riding.
“We have enough room to cater for all types of bikes and riders; motocross, enduro, natural terrain MX, trail riding, vintage MX, Quads, Mototrials, fifties, you name it. The focal point of the plan is the permanent Supercross / Stadiumcross facility which is something our sport is crying out for” said Peter Ovens for the SMCC.
“Permanent Supercross facilities, catering for both elite level Australian Championship events and as a training facility for riders to safely learn their sport, simply don’t exist in this country. We need to keep raising the bar to not only get our sport into the mainstream spotlight, but also give our up and coming riders controlled, accessible and safe environments to train for their chosen sport. We have the most awesome site for the SX stadium which, for anyone who is familiar with Barrabool, is over the top of the hill facing the bay and city lights of Geelong and Melbourne. The atmosphere would be unique, to say the least! ” Ovens added.
The proposed Ride Park plan has enough room for various tracks to suit different disciplines, plus another 150 acres of hills and gullies which will be planted out in bushland for trail riding and enduro competitions. The club expects to be able to have multiple trails of around 20 minutes in length. “What is so encouraging about all this is the fact that everyone is behind us, including local shires, Department of Sustainability and Environment, our local MP’s, M/C industry, everyone!
All we need is to show we are making good headway via our “Big picture” Wall website fundraiser, and it will all fall into place.” To see the plan click here
