The Oceania Motocross Championship alternates on a bi-annual basis between Australia and New Zealand. It was last held in late 2006 at the Taupo MX circuit in New Zealand, with the previous event being held in November 2005 at McAdam Park, Barrabool. It was this event at Barrabool where the event was elevated from a situation of struggling to earn the credibility it was deserving of, into a must see race on the calendar.
The 2005 event was headlines by World Championship contender Josh Coppins and American based Aussie pro- Brett Metcalfe. Brett flew home to captain the Australian team and lead by example with two of the most amazing come from behind wins MX fans are ever likely to see.
After Australia won the battle, and with the SMCC pulling off a hugely successful
event in 2005, the following year the Oceania event swapped to across the Tasman
to Taupo, New Zealand where the host club continued to uphold the new found professionalism
of the event. European riders including World Champion Stefan Everts were invited
to race, which added to the International flavour, drawing large crowds and ensuring
the continued success of the Oceania Motocross Championships.
